The Offspring

C'est Dexter Holland, chanteur et guitariste, qui a créé The Offspring en 1987. Epaulé par le bassiste Greg K, le second guitariste Noodle Wasserman et le batteur Ron Welty, il va faire de sa formation l'une des plus populaires des Etats-Unis.
Ces Californiens ont très vite surfé sur la vague du succès du mouvement "grunge", enfanté à Seattle à la fin des années 80. Le premier album, éponyme, arrive en 1989, suivi par Ignition en 1992.
Mais c'est leur troisième opus, Smash, en 1994, qui fait d'eux un groupe mondialement connu. Il se vend à quatorze millions d'exemplaires dans le monde (dont un million en France), grâce notamment au tube Come Out And Play !
De quoi prendre un peu de bon temps et l'occasion pour Dexter et Greg de partir se payer des bonnes parties de pêche à la truite dans le Montana...
Batman
The Offspring reprend du service en 1997, tout d'abord en participant à la bande originale du film "Batman Forever" puis en publiant Ixnay On The Hombre, dont le succès reste important mais nettement moindre.
Americana, paru en 1998, marque toutefois un certain retour "à la normale" avec dix millions de copies vendues sur toute la planète. Ils s'y offrent une version complètement déjantée du Feelings de Morris Albert.
Eclat
Il faut ensuite patienter deux ans avant la sortie de Conspiracy Of One. En 2002, The Offspring engage un nouveau batteur pour Splinter, en la personne d'Atom Willard.
Ce disque dont le nom signifie littéralement "éclat", n'en manque pas ! Fruit de longs mois de travail, il regorge de douze nouvelles compositions sans surprise mais de très bonne facture. The Offspring s'offre même quelques sonorités ska dans The Worst Hangover Ever !
Une compilation est attendue pour le début de l'année 2005. Elle reprend évidemment les grands succès du groupe mais contient aussi quelques inédits dont une reprise de Police.
